Engendered Exhibit - Atlantic Works Gallery

I'm excited for the weekend as the Engendered Exhibit opens at the Atlantic Works Gallery here in Boston.  Curated by Samantha Marder, the show is up 6/7 through 7/7.  Two pieces will be up - both from the collage series Child's Play.  The specific pieces are constructed from 50's greeting cards of boys and girls in various celebratory scenes (the cards originally sold as "Happy Birthday Cousin Cards").

I've (de/re)constructed these cards.  The figures melt into one another, blurring the line where one figure begins and another ends.  The presentation is clean (Ink, Colored Pencil on white Bristol Board), colorful and relatively restrained compared to my other work.

The composition is an inquiry, not a message.  The work doesn't shout or preen for acknowledgement.  It invites contemplation while tracing the route of line and color.  How do I see gender?  Where do I see its presence and implications?  What history and imagery inform that perspective?
